Daily Concepts’ favorite yogi is back and she’s sharing a pose that just right for starting off the new year. Welcome back, Marta Weiss of Yoga Naharah!
Ready to get started? Today, she’s teaching us Vasisthasana or Side Plank with two variations. “What’s nice about this pose is it improves your sense of balance, strengthens the arms, core and legs,” says Marta. “This is a challenging pose for most people. Side Plank strengthens your mental abilities, tests your sensibilities and uplifts your spirit when working into the posture.”
There are variations to get you started. Begin in Downward Facing Dog (see photo above). Move the right hand center so it’s in line with your chin. Roll onto the outer edge of your right foot, stack the feet/legs. Lift your left arm towards the sky. Raise the hips. (See photo below).
Need something easier? Marta says to try this variation:
Begin in Downward Facing Dog (see photo #2 above). Move the right hand center so it’s in line with your chin. Roll onto the outer edge of your right foot. Cross the left leg in front of the body with the knee bent and left foot in a perpendicular angle in front of the torso. Lift your left arm towards the sky. Raise the hips upward. (See photo below).
Repeat Side Plank pose on the left side.
Thanks, Marta! We can’t wait to see what other poses you have waiting for us in 2015.
