Every October, a rush of Monarch Butterflies set a course for the quaint seaside city of Goleta. To these winged beauties, summer has come calling, despite what the calendar says. Surfers would concur. This area of the Southern California coast is ripe with waves, no matter the season. For those ready to partake in a “Golden State of Mind” on the American Riviera, there’s a haven for unpacking and spending some time – The Goodland Hotel Santa Barbara, a Kimpton Hotel.
The brainchild behind this re-imagined property (it was once a Holiday Inn) is Paul Makarechian of Makar Properties. While attending the University of California Santa Barbara, nearby Goleta grabbed hold of Makarechian. Rather than hold this jewel close to his vest, as surfers do when it comes to beloved beaches, Makarechian decided to share it with the world. Along with the Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants brand, Makarechian did just that, opening The Goodland this fall.
Kimpton properties are known for making unique statements and The Goodland doesn’t disappoint on that count. It has a retro beach vibe, starting with Mini–Mexican Coca Cola and Coronitas bestowed as welcome amenities at check-in (traditional bottle openers serve as drawer pulls on bedside tables in guest rooms). There’s also a collection of vinyl records that can actually be played in-room versus just looked at, plus a record concierge if Herb Alpert doesn’t suit a guest’s fancy.
At the heart of the 158-room hotel is a swimming pool that’s already become a hot spot where deejays spin. Served ‘round the pool are specialty-crafted cocktails, buckets of beer and spiked-aqua frescas. Those preferring the comfort of bar stools need merely head into Good Bar just off the lobby. This is also the place to grab breakfast and coffee in the morning.
Where sit-down meals occur is Outpost at The Goodland, helmed by Executive Chef Derek Simcik. The venue is already gaining a reputation for its coastal southern California-inspired cuisine with a seafood bent.
When the California landscape beckons for exploring, complimentary bicycles from The Goodland are on tap. Onsite workouts are also possible in the hotel gym or during fitness classes. Prefer asanas and solitude? Yoga mats are available for guest use as well. Taking walks with man’s best friend is also an option, as the property is pet-friendly.
After a day catching waves or strolling down Santa Barbara’s infamous State Street, Good Spa offers up treatments that lull into a coma. And being able to kick back afterwards by the pool… Well, that’s what a Golden State of Mind is all about.
*Nightly rate starts at $225
