What Our Packaging Is Actually Made Of
Sugarcane, corn, and a distinction most brands would rather you did not notice.
I have become deeply suspicious of the little leaf symbol.
You know the one. It appears on a box, in green, next to a word like eco or natural or earth-friendly, and it means precisely nothing. There is no standard behind it. Nobody checks. It is a mood, printed on cardboard.
So this is a post about what our packaging is actually made of, in specific terms, including the part that is inconvenient for us.
Sugarcane, after the sugar
When sugarcane is pressed for sugar, what is left is a fibrous pulp called bagasse. For most of the world it is a waste product, and a great deal of it is simply burned.
Pressed and moulded, it becomes packaging. It protects as well as plastic does. It holds an embossed logo. And because it is plant fibre rather than polymer, it can return to soil.
No new crop is planted for it. It is the leftovers of something that was being grown anyway.
That last point is the one I care about most, and it is the reason we chose bagasse over other materials that would have looked equally green on a shelf.
The distinction nobody explains
Here is the part that most brands leave vague, and where I want to be tediously clear.
Compostable is not one thing. It is two.
Home compostable means a material will break down in a domestic heap, at the temperatures a garden actually reaches. Industrially compostable means it needs a commercial facility, where sustained heat does work your compost bin cannot.
Both are legitimate. They are not interchangeable. And a material tested for one and marketed as the other will sit in someone's garden looking accusatory for a year, which is worse than useless , it teaches people that composting does not work.
The sugarcane pulp packaging is suitable for home composting and for municipal organics collection.

The Compostable Mesh Sponge is a different material — PLA, a plant-based bioplastic made from corn — and it is certified ABAP20018. It needs an industrial facility. Put it in your green bin, not a garden heap. A home pile does not get hot enough, and it will still be there next year.
The cord on the mesh sponge, and on the Glow Pebbles, is polyester. It is not compostable. Cut it off and bin it separately. I would rather tell you that than have you discover it in a year

If you compost at home
Peel off the printed sleeve and any adhesive label first, those go in paper recycling, not the heap.
Then tear the shell into pieces roughly palm-sized or smaller. This is the step everyone skips and the one that matters most: an intact moulded shell traps air, sheds water, and can sit whole for a season. Torn pieces have surface area, and surface area is what the microbes work on.
Wet the pieces. Bury them in the middle of the heap where the heat is, not on top. Turn it as you normally would.
In an active, well-balanced heap the fibre is usually unrecognisable within two to three months. In a cold or neglected one it takes considerably longer — and that is a property of the heap rather than of the material.
Why any of this matters
Because care that stops at your own skin was never really care.
You can buy a beautiful object, use it thoughtfully, feel briefly better, and hand the packaging straight to a landfill where it will outlive you. That is not a ritual. That is a purchase with good lighting.
Conscious craftsmanship is mostly a series of unglamorous decisions like the ones in this post. None of them are interesting on their own. Together they are the difference between meaning it and saying it.
